Britney Spears' ex-boyfriend reportedly insists he didn't cheat on her because their relationship was already over.

Last week it was reported the star had ended her romance with David Lucado after she saw footage of him kissing and dancing with another woman. She later confirmed the breakup on her social media sites, but apparently David sees things a little differently.

According to TMZ he has told friends the footage of him cavorting with another woman was taken after he and Britney had gone their separate ways.

He alleges the star pulled the plug on their romance on August 6, texting him saying: "I'm done with you."

It's claimed the stars had been disagreeing about "outside influences", including the people who take care of Britney's personal and professional affairs. She has been under a conservatorship since her meltdown in 2008, with her father Jamie one of those who makes decisions on her behalf.

The footage of David was taken on August 7, but the very next day he and Britney got back together. Apparently he is desperate to talk to his ex about what happened and explain he believes they weren't together when it happened.

Jamie has apparently bought the video, as he reportedly wants to save his daughter any embarrassment if it goes live.

The 32-year-old star already seems to be putting the relationship behind her as she told fans how happy she is to be single at one of her recent Las Vegas residency shows.

"Well, by now everyone knows my boyfriend cheated on me. But the best part of breaking up is going on first dates," she told the audience.

"OMG, OMG, I need a hot guy. Where are the hot guys here tonight?"
