I Look To You, the diva's first studio offering since 2002, went straight to the top of the Billboard album chart with sales of 305,000 copies.
Her fourth number one album on the chart, it chalked up the biggest week one sales of her career and the biggest of any female artist so far this year.
And as she celebrated her comeback success, a teaser for her chat with legendary chat show host Oprah Winfrey has aired on US TV- and promises to be a no-holds-barred interview.
In the two-part interview, Houston, 46, reveals how she spent seven months in her pajamas in the depths of her drug hell with husband Bobby Brown.
She also tells how her life first began to spiral out of control after her hit film The Bodyguard in 1992.
On the trailer, Oprah said: "It will leave you gasping."
She said nothing is held back in the =interview, which will be shown over two days on U.S. network ABC.
Oprah added: "She talks about when it started to go wrong and it started to go wrong after The Bodyguard, that was a long time ago.
"The thing that is the most shocking to me is that Whitney Houston tried to make herself smaller in order to fit in a marriage so the man could be bigger.
"How many women have done that? She's done the same thing so many women have done.
"I deeply felt for her and I actually got it. She was trying to be the good wife. She really, really, truly loved him."
