The Shake It Off hitmaker went public with the latest round in her battle with the music moguls on Thursday (14Nov19), claiming they have refused to sign off on allowing her to play the bulk of her early discography at the upcoming 2019 American Music Awards, where she will receive the Artist of the Decade honour, and in a planned Netflix documentary about her life.
Their decision also apparently affected Swift's set at a recent concert event for China's e-commerce giant Alibaba.
Her former Big Machine Label Group boss Borchetta and Braun, who purchased the rights to her first six albums from Borchetta earlier this year (19), have insisted Swift's allegations are based on "false information", making it clear they "do not have the right to keep her from performing live anywhere".
Now Swift's spokesperson, Tree Paine, has responded to their claims by sharing the message the pop superstar reportedly received about the license denials.
In a new statement issued on Friday, the rep writes, "The truth is, on October 28, 2019 at 5:17 p.m. the Vice President, Rights Management and Business Affairs from Big Machine Label Group sent Taylor Swift's team the following: 'Please be advised that BMLG will not agree to issue licenses for existing recordings or waivers of its re-recording restrictions in connection with these two projects: The Netflix documentary and The Alibaba 'Double Eleven' event.'
"To avoid an argument over rights, Taylor performed three songs off her new album Lover at the Double Eleven event as it was clear that Big Machine Label Group felt any televised performance of catalog songs violated her agreement."
Paine goes on to allege Borchetta "flatly denied" another request regarding the AMAs gig and Netflix project on Thursday, and accuses label officials of trying to spin the situation when they are in the wrong: "Lastly, Big Machine is trying to deflect and make this about money by saying she owes them but, an independent, professional auditor has determined that Big Machine owes Taylor $7.9 million dollars of unpaid royalties over several years," the statement concludes.
But Big Machine executives are standing by their story, declaring Swift "can 100% perform all of her catalog, past and present, on the AMAs".
The official adds to TMZ, "We are excited for all her fans, as all of the confusion has now been cleared up, and we now welcome Taylor to perform all of her hits on the AMAs."
