Clarkson gets apology for 'fat shaming' jibes

Kelly Clarkson has received an apology from a TV news anchor after he criticised her weight.
Kelly Clarkson has received an apology from a TV news anchor after he criticised her weight.

Fox news host Chris Wallace received a backlash from viewers and his peers after making a derogatory comment about the former American Idol winner's post-baby figure on Friday. The 67-year-old has now realised the error of his ways and apologised to the singer for his 'fat shaming' remarks.

'I sincerely apologise to Kelly Clarkson for my offensive comment,' he told US Weekly in a statement on Sunday. "I admire her remarkable talent and that should have been the focus of any discussion about her.'

Chris made the comments during an appearance on The Mike Gallagher Show. The TV star initially had playful banter with his host and friend about his weight, before the conversation moved on to the Since You've Been Gone singer.

'Don't fat shame me. You do a lot of fat shaming," Mike, 54, said during the show. "That's the phrase now, 'fat shaming.' Have you seen Kelly Clarkson? You know the singer, Kelly Clarkson? Holy cow, did she blow up."

While Chris initially dodged the question, he ended up passing comment on the 32-year-old, who gave birth to her first child in June last year.

'Really? Do we want to talk about some of your friends?' he replied. 'Kelly Clarkson's got a lovely voice. She could stay off the deep dish pizza for a little while.'

While Kelly is yet to respond to the original conversation or the subsequent apology, she has previously spoken about the media attention around her weight.

'We are who we are. Whatever size, and it doesn't meant that we're gonna be that forever,' she said on Friday during an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres' chat show.
