Selena Gomez humbled by Unicef trip

Selena Gomez 'snapped out' of complaining about her hair after visiting children in Ghana.
Selena Gomez 'snapped out' of complaining about her hair after visiting children in Ghana.

The actress travelled to the country with UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund), for which she is an ambassador. The organisation aims to help young people all over the world and seeing their work up close made the 19-year-old re-evaluate her life.

'I met a teenager who travelled from village to village protesting the lack of education and he once had a machine gun pointed at his head as a result. I was completely floored to hear he went through that ' and at the age of 14!' she explained. 'Every day, there's one little thing I'm complaining about, whether it's my hair or that I'm waking up too early, but my encounters with the people of Ghana have made me snap out of it.'

Education was one of the main things Selena learned about during her visit. She was astounded to see how vital it is to the children over there, especially when it didn't used to be something she considered that much.

'I was struck by how eager the kids were to get an education. That's something we take for granted in the United States. There have been so many times when I've said, 'I hate homework, I hate math,' but they're literally begging for it over there,' she told the February edition of InStyle magazine.
